A lone figure seated in stillness at the edge of a cliff as evening falls

EP. 03  (41 MIN)

In Praise of Silence

Silence has a bad reputation: empty, awkward, something to fill. But every contemplative tradition on earth treats it as full — full of presence, full of answers that noise keeps drowning out. This episode is our love letter to the quiet, and a field guide for finding it.

In this episode

02:30 — The noise audit. Counting the sounds of one ordinary day — and what the total reveals.

11:15 — Sacred spaces. Chapels, forests, kitchens at dawn: where silence gathers, and why.

20:40 — Solitude vs. loneliness. The crucial difference, and how to turn one into the other.

31:00 — A guided minute. Sixty seconds of shared stillness — our quietest segment yet.

“Silence is not the absence of sound. It is the presence of everything, finally heard.”

Building a quieter life

You don't need a monastery — though we wouldn't talk you out of visiting one. Start with thresholds: the first ten minutes of the morning, the drive home, the hour before sleep. Guard one of them. Let it be unfilled, unoptimized, unposted. Watch what rises in the space you refuse to fill.

For the restless listener

If sitting still feels impossible, begin in motion: a silent walk, dishes washed slowly, bread kneaded by hand. The body can enter quiet before the mind agrees to follow. Meet yourself where you are — the silence will do the rest.
